KOLKATA: As the Election Commission of India (ECI) maintains a tight grip on poll-bound states, its decision to replace the Police Commissioner of Chennai with Abin Dinesh Modak today has sent shockwaves through the administrative corridors of West Bengal. The ECI’s “zero-tolerance” policy toward perceived partisan behavior has prompted the West Bengal government to initiate a voluntary internal audit of its own sensitive police postings.

In Kolkata, the focus is now on the “neutrality” of the local station house officers (SHOs) in districts like North 24 Parganas and Malda. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has reacted sharply to the ECI’s frequent transfers, alleging that the central body is “clearing the path” for the opposition. However, the ECI maintains that these shifts are standard procedure to ensure a “level playing field.”

The administrative reshuffle in Bengal is expected to continue tomorrow, with the ECI likely to name new District Magistrates for at least three sensitive districts where “mass voter deletions” have been reported. This high-stakes administrative chess match is being closely watched by political analysts as a precursor to the intensity of the upcoming voting days.
