BJP Sweeps West Bengal with Historic Mandate
Party set to form first-ever government in state; TMC’s 15-year rule comes to an end
In a landmark political shift, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a decisive mandate in West Bengal, paving the way to form its first government in the state since Independence.
BJP has won 177 seats and is leading in 31, comfortably crossing the majority mark of 148 in the 293-seat Assembly (polling was held for 294 seats). The All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) has won 61 seats and is leading in 18, marking a significant decline after 15 years in power.

A major highlight of the results is the defeat of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in her stronghold Bhabanipur. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari defeated her by over 15,000 votes, delivering a symbolic and decisive blow.
Other Key Results:
- Agnimitra Paul won from Asansol Dakshin
- Rekha Patra won from Hingalganj
- Subrata Maitra defeated Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury in Baharampur
- Reyar Hossain Sarkar won Bhagawangola
- Humayun Kabir won both Nowda and Rejinagar
The Congress and Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) secured two seats each, while the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) won one seat.

Voting & Security:
- Polling held in two phases: April 23 and 29
- Record turnout: 92.47%
- Over 2.5 lakh CAPF personnel deployed
Repolling was conducted in select booths, while voting in Falta constituency was countermanded due to electoral violations. Fresh polling there will take place on May 21, with counting on May 24.
The results mark a dramatic turnaround from 2021, when TMC had won 215 seats and BJP 77, signalling a major political realignment in the state.
