Banking Services May Be Hit as SBI Staff Plan Protest
Employees of State Bank of India under the banner of the All India State Bank of India Staff Federation have threatened to launch a two-day nationwide strike beginning May 25 over various demands, including adequate staff recruitment. If carried out, the protest could disrupt banking services across the country for nearly five consecutive days due to weekends and regional holidays.
Staff members of State Bank of India affiliated with the All India State Bank of India Staff Federation have threatened to go on a two-day nationwide strike starting May 25 to press for several demands, including the recruitment of adequate employees in the bank.
According to union representatives, the proposed strike has been called to highlight concerns over workforce shortages, increased workload on existing staff, and other employee-related issues.
If the strike takes place, banking operations at SBI branches across the country could face significant disruptions for nearly five consecutive days. The fourth Saturday and Sunday fall immediately before the strike dates, while many states are also expected to observe a public holiday on May 27 on account of Eid al-Adha, the day after the strike concludes.
Customers may experience interruptions in branch services such as cash transactions, cheque clearances, account-related work, and other banking operations during the period. However, digital banking services including internet banking, mobile banking, ATMs, and UPI-based transactions are likely to continue functioning normally.
The development comes at a time when public sector banks are witnessing increasing demand for customer services and digital expansion, while employee unions continue to raise concerns regarding staffing levels and working conditions.
