West Bengal Moves to Join Centre’s NAKSHA Urban Land Survey Programme
The West Bengal government has formally communicated its intention to join the NAKSHA urban land records modernisation programme, months after the previous TMC government did not pursue participation despite three state civic bodies being included in its pilot phase.

Minister of State for Rural Development Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, in a written reply to a question from BJP MP Samik Bhattacharya, said the Department of Land Resources has received official communication from the West Bengal government expressing its intention to join the scheme.
NAKSHA, or the National Geospatial Knowledge-based Land Survey of Urban Habitations, was launched on February 18, 2025, under the Digital India Land Records Modernisation Programme (DILRMP).
The programme was launched when the TMC was in power in West Bengal and initially covered 152 urban local bodies across 26 states, according to the minister.
The NAKSHA programme focuses on modernising urban land records through geospatial technologies and aims to strengthen the accuracy and accessibility of land-related information.
The West Bengal government’s latest communication marks a move towards participating in the national urban land records modernisation initiative after the state had not pursued participation during the earlier phase.
