Suvendu Adhikari Files Nomination for Nandigram in High-Stakes Battle
The political temperature in West Bengal reached a boiling point today as Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari officially filed his nomination papers for the Nandigram constituency. Adhikari, accompanied by former state president Dilip Ghosh and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, submitted his documents to the Sub-Divisional Officer at Haldia. The event was not just a legal requirement but a massive show of strength, intended to signal unity within the BJP’s top brass ahead of the April 23 polling date.
Nandigram remains the most symbolic battleground in the state, following Adhikari’s narrow victory over Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in 2021. This time, Adhikari faces a unique challenge from the TMC’s Pabitra Kar, a former trusted lieutenant who defected from the BJP just before his candidacy was finalized. During a post-nomination press conference, Adhikari expressed unwavering confidence, stating that the demand for a “clean, corruption-free, and ethical government” is higher than ever before. He notably claimed he would win not only in Nandigram but also in the Bhabanipur seat, where the BJP has also fielded him in a strategic dual-candidacy move.
The day was marked by an “unmistakable signal” of internal party cohesion, as Dilip Ghosh stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Adhikari, dispelling rumors of friction between the “old guard” and the “new guard” of the Bengal BJP. Adhikari’s campaign is expected to focus heavily on the issues of local corruption, central scheme implementation, and the “Nandigram pride.” With the TMC mobilizing its top leaders to reclaim this bastion, the next few weeks are set to see an unprecedented level of political campaigning in the district.
