Massive Security Sweep Before Bengal Polls, 2,473 Apprehended
A total of 2,473 people were apprehended across West Bengal over the past two and a half days as part of intensified surveillance measures ahead of the second phase of the state assembly elections, an Election Commission of India official said on Tuesday.
According to officials, the arrests and detentions were carried out in multiple districts scheduled to vote on April 29, with the crackdown taking place over a 60-hour period.
The official said 809 people were detained on Monday night alone, while the total number rose to 2,473 by Tuesday. Most of those apprehended were identified as potential troublemakers.
The second phase of the West Bengal Assembly Election will cover several districts, with heightened security arrangements in place to ensure peaceful polling.
