Kolkata Metro Edges Closer to Sector V Connectivity: Successful High-Speed Trials on Orange Line Extension
Kolkata’s transit landscape is on the verge of a major transformation as the Metro Railway successfully conducted a series of high-speed trials on the Orange Line (Line 6) extension today. The trials, which focused on the stretch between Hemanta Mukhopadhyay (Ruby) and Beleghata, mark a critical milestone in the city’s goal to link the southern suburbs directly with the Salt Lake IT hub and eventually the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport.
The high-speed trial involved an 8-coach Medha rake, which touched a peak speed of 83 km/h during its run across the elevated viaduct. Engineers from Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) and Metro Railway officials monitored various technical parameters, including the Third Rail current collection, track stability, and the responsiveness of the advanced signaling system.
The trial serves as a precursor to the mandatory inspection by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS). Currently, the Orange Line is operational for a 9.9 km stretch from Kavi Subhash (New Garia) to Beleghata. Today’s successful runs are part of the final push to stabilize the corridor before extending commercial services toward the Salt Lake Sector V interchange point.
One of the most significant updates accompanying today’s trials is the progress on the “Chingrighata Gap.” For over a year, a 366-meter missing link at the busy Chingrighata intersection had stalled the line’s progress to Sector V. Following the resolution of traffic diversion hurdles in late 2025, the girder-launching process is now in its final stages.
Metro officials confirmed that once this gap is bridged, the line will integrate with the Green Line (East-West Metro) at Sector V. This “ring” connectivity will allow a passenger from New Garia to reach Howrah Maidan or the Airport with a single interchange, drastically reducing travel time from nearly 2 hours by road to just under 50 minutes by rail.
For the thousands of IT professionals and students who commute daily to Sector V and New Town, today’s trials offer a glimmer of hope. The Metro Railway has set an ambitious target to make the entire 32 km corridor from New Garia to the Airport fully operational by December 2026.
The next phase of trials is expected to commence in the New Town segment, where nearly 90% of the station work is already complete. To ensure passenger convenience during this expansion, the Kolkata Metro has also upgraded its “Aamar Kolkata Metro” app, allowing commuters to track real-time train timings and purchase QR-based tickets for the Orange Line integrated with the existing Blue and Green lines.
