Work on the long-pending Chingrighata section of Kolkata Metro’s Orange Line will begin from May 15 along the busy Eastern Metropolitan Bypass in Kolkata, prompting authorities to impose extended traffic restrictions over two consecutive weekends this month.

According to a senior Metro official, Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), the executing agency for the corridor, will undertake segment launching work over piers P-317, P-318 and P-319 at Chingrighata. The work forms part of the elevated viaduct construction for the Orange Line corridor connecting Kavi Subhas to the airport.

To facilitate the construction activity, a continuous 60-hour traffic closure will be enforced from 8 pm on May 15 until 8 am on May 18. The restriction will apply to the western flank of the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass where segment launching between piers P-317 and P-318 will take place.

Authorities are expected to issue detailed traffic diversion plans to manage congestion on one of Kolkata’s busiest arterial roads during the closure period. Commuters have been advised to use alternative routes and plan journeys in advance.

The Orange Line project is considered a major infrastructure initiative aimed at improving connectivity between south Kolkata and the airport, while easing pressure on the city’s road transport network.
