Bengal CM Signals Possible Delimitation and Assembly Expansion
Suvendu Adhikari on Friday indicated the possibility of a future delimitation exercise in West Bengal, suggesting that an increase in the number of constituencies could necessitate the construction of a new Assembly building.
Suvendu Adhikari on Friday hinted at the possibility of a future delimitation exercise in the state, stating that the number of Assembly constituencies could increase in the coming years and may require major changes to legislative infrastructure.
The remarks were made in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly shortly after the election of Rathindra Basu as the new Speaker.
Addressing members of the House, the chief minister said the current Assembly infrastructure may need substantial expansion in the future if the number of constituencies rises following delimitation.

She indicated that the possibility of additional constituencies could eventually make the construction of a new Assembly building necessary to accommodate a larger number of legislators and related administrative requirements.
Delimitation refers to the process of redrawing the boundaries and number of electoral constituencies based on population changes and demographic factors. Such exercises are carried out periodically to ensure balanced political representation.
The comments sparked discussion within political circles, as any future delimitation exercise could significantly alter the state’s electoral landscape and legislative composition.
The statement came during a session marked by the unanimous election of Rathindra Basu as Speaker of the Assembly, reflecting a rare moment of consensus among ruling and opposition parties in the House.
