Supreme Court Says Food Warning Labels Needed to Protect Children’s Health
The Supreme Court has questioned the delay in introducing mandatory front-of-package warning labels on packaged foods, stressing their importance in helping consumers, particularly children, make informed and healthier food choices.
The Supreme Court on Thursday questioned the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) over the delay in introducing warning labels on packaged foods, asking whether the government “does not want its people to be healthy”.
The top court was hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the public charitable trust 3S and Our Health Society, seeking directions to the Centre, states and Union territories to implement mandatory front-of-package warning labels (FOPL) on packaged food products.
A bench comprising Justice J B Pardiwala and Justice K Vinod Chandran emphasised the importance of FOPL labels in creating awareness among consumers about the nutritional characteristics of packaged foods.
The bench observed that such warning labels are particularly important for growing children, who are increasingly becoming accustomed to or addicted to junk food.
The PIL seeks a mandatory warning-label framework that would enable consumers to better understand the contents and potential health implications of packaged food products before purchasing or consuming them.
The court’s observations highlight the growing concern over unhealthy food consumption and the need for clearer information on packaged food products to help consumers make informed choices.
