The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red colour warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated extremely heavy rainfall, over Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha today following the formation of a low-pressure area over the North Bay of Bengal.

The weather department has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall over parts of Chhattisgarh until tomorrow. Heavy rainfall is also expected over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, East Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Madhya Maharashtra and West Madhya Pradesh today.

Similar rainfall conditions are expected across Karnataka, Kerala, Mahe, Konkan and Goa, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Vidarbha and the northeastern states during the day.

The IMD has also forecast thunderstorms and lightning over Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The widespread weather activity is associated with the low-pressure system over the North Bay of Bengal, which is expected to influence rainfall across several parts of eastern and central India.
