Odisha to Install 360-Degree Coastal Surveillance Cameras Amid Rising Climate Risks

The Odisha government has decided to enhance its disaster management infrastructure by installing 360-degree surveillance cameras along the state’s coastline. The initiative is aimed at improving weather monitoring capabilities and enabling quicker responses to emerging weather-related threats.

Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari said the state recently experienced simultaneous flooding across several major river systems, including the Mahanadi, Salandi, Brahmani, Baitarani, Budhabalanga, Devi, and Jalaka rivers. Such widespread flooding occurring at the same time is an indication of evolving weather patterns that require stronger monitoring and preparedness measures.

According to the minister, these unusual flood events reflect the growing influence of climate change on Odisha’s weather systems. The planned surveillance cameras are expected to improve real-time observation of coastal conditions, helping authorities respond more effectively to cyclones, heavy rainfall, storm surges, and other natural disasters.
