Odisha Sees Rain and Thunderstorms as Monsoon Conditions Strengthen
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast favourable conditions for the Southwest Monsoon to progress into Odisha and several other regions over the next two to three days. While thunderstorms and rainfall have brought temporary relief, residents are being advised to prepare for persistent hot and humid weather in the immediate future.
Odisha has witnessed spells of rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds, offering intermittent respite from the prevailing heatwave conditions across the state. However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has cautioned that hot and humid weather is likely to continue over the next couple of days.
Speaking in Bhubaneswar, Dr. Manorama Mohanty, Director of IMD Bhubaneswar, said atmospheric conditions are gradually becoming conducive for the further advancement of the Southwest Monsoon.
According to the IMD, the monsoon is expected to progress over the next two to three days into the central Arabian Sea and several parts of the country, including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, the west-central and northwest Bay of Bengal, and parts of West Bengal, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh.
Despite the rainfall activity, temperatures remained significantly high in several districts. Balangir recorded the state’s highest maximum temperature at 41 degrees Celsius, while many other areas experienced temperatures close to 40 degrees Celsius.
Weather experts have advised residents to remain cautious, particularly during afternoon hours, as the combination of elevated temperatures and high humidity levels could increase discomfort and heat-related health risks. People are encouraged to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, and monitor official weather advisories for updates on thunderstorm activity and monsoon progression.
The anticipated arrival of the Southwest Monsoon is expected to bring more widespread rainfall to Odisha, providing much-needed relief to farmers and easing the intense summer conditions that have affected the state in recent weeks.
