Milk Prices in Kerala to Increase from June 1

Milma has announced an increase of ₹4 per litre in milk prices across Kerala, effective from June 1. The cooperative federation said the revision became necessary due to rising production costs, drought conditions, and financial challenges faced by dairy farmers in the state.

Milma on Wednesday announced a hike of ₹4 per litre in milk prices in Kerala. The revised prices will come into effect from June 1 following a decision taken during a meeting of the Milma Board of Directors held earlier in the day.

Officials stated that out of the increased amount, ₹3.35 per litre would be directly passed on to dairy farmers in order to support them amid rising production expenses and declining profitability.

Milma had previously sought a price increase ranging between ₹4 and ₹6 per litre, citing mounting financial difficulties in the dairy sector. Regional unions under the federation had also repeatedly demanded a revision in milk prices to provide better income support for farmers.

According to the federation, severe drought conditions in Kerala and the sharp rise in prices of milk procured from neighbouring states have caused losses in milk sales for regional unions. The organisation noted that dairy farmers are facing increasing hardships due to higher feed costs, input expenses, and reduced earnings.

In an official statement, Milma said that the substantial increase in production input costs and the need to retain dairy farmers in the sector made the milk price revision unavoidable. The federation also indicated that prices of other milk products may be revised upward in the near future.
