Low-Pressure Area Over Bay of Bengal May Strengthen Soon
Low-Pressure System Over Bay of Bengal Expected to Strengthen in Next 48 Hours
The India Meteorological Department on Tuesday said conditions are becoming favourable for the onset of the southwest monsoon over parts of the south Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands toward the end of this week.
According to the IMD’s daily weather forecast, a low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal remained active over the same region as of 8:30 am on May 12. The associated cyclonic circulation currently extends up to 4.5 kilometres above mean sea level.
The weather agency stated that the system is likely to intensify further over the next 48 hours, potentially supporting the early advancement of monsoon conditions in the region.
The southwest monsoon typically reaches the Andaman and Nicobar Islands around May 20 before gradually progressing westward toward mainland India in the following weeks.
Meteorologists closely monitor developments over the Bay of Bengal during this period, as the onset and progress of the monsoon play a crucial role in India’s agriculture, water resources, and overall economic activity.
