Authorities in Kerala have sounded a high alert following a preliminary positive test result for Nipah Virus Infection in a 43-year-old man admitted to the Government Medical College.

According to officials, the patient, a businessman from Feroke, initially tested positive for the highly infectious virus during preliminary screening.

To confirm the diagnosis, the patient’s samples have been sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune, which serves as the country’s apex laboratory for viral disease confirmation. Officials said the confirmatory test results are expected shortly.

Contact Tracing Underway

The Kerala Health Department has swiftly initiated containment measures, including:

  • Identifying and tracing all individuals who may have come into contact with the patient,
  • Isolating high-risk contacts,
  • Intensifying surveillance in the affected area, and
  • Strengthening infection prevention protocols at healthcare facilities.

Health authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent any potential spread of the virus.

About Nipah Virus

Common symptoms include:

  • Fever,
  • Headache,
  • Respiratory distress,
  • Vomiting,
  • Drowsiness, and
  • In severe cases, encephalitis (brain inflammation).

The virus has a relatively high fatality rate, making early detection and rapid public health intervention critical.

Kerala’s Preparedness

Kerala has previously dealt with Nipah outbreaks and has established robust response mechanisms, including contact-tracing teams, isolation facilities, and public awareness campaigns.

Officials have urged the public not to panic and to rely only on information released by the Health Department. Residents have also been advised to:

  • Follow hygiene protocols,
  • Avoid unnecessary visits to healthcare facilities,
  • Report symptoms promptly, and
  • Cooperate with health officials during surveillance activities.

Awaiting Confirmation

While the preliminary result has prompted heightened vigilance, officials stressed that the case will be officially classified only after confirmation from NIV Pune.

The state’s health machinery remains on alert as it awaits the laboratory findings, with all necessary precautionary measures already in place to safeguard public health.
