Indian Railways has highlighted a series of major environmental initiatives undertaken during 2025-26, showcasing its commitment to sustainability, cleaner transport, and ecological conservation across the country.

According to the Railways, a total of 81 lakh 59 thousand trees have been planted across various railway zones during 2025-26. Extensive plantation drives along railway tracks are helping prevent soil erosion while making train journeys greener, safer, and more pleasant for passengers.

The national transporter also stated that 3.66 lakh bio-toilets have been installed since 2014. These facilities are aimed at ensuring cleaner railway tracks, protecting soil and groundwater, and improving onboard hygiene for millions of daily travellers.

Indian Railways further noted that 99.6 per cent of its broad gauge network has been electrified, significantly reducing diesel consumption and lowering dependence on oil imports, especially amid global energy uncertainties linked to the West Asia crisis.

In the area of water conservation, Railways has built 8,313 rainwater harvesting structures since 2016-17 to efficiently capture rainwater and strengthen water management across stations. Additionally, 109 ponds, tanks, and wetlands on railway land have been restored, helping recharge groundwater and create biodiversity habitats that benefit surrounding communities.
