Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Likely in Several States Today

The India Meteorological Department has predicted favourable conditions for the further advancement of the southwest monsoon over southern and central parts of the country over the next two to three days. Heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and heatwave conditions are also expected across several regions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday said that conditions remain favourable for the further advancement of the southwest monsoon into additional parts of the country over the next two to three days.

According to the weather agency, the monsoon is expected to progress into:

  • The remaining parts of Karnataka,
  • Telangana,
  • Andhra Pradesh,
  • Some more areas of Odisha, and
  • Parts of south Chhattisgarh.

The advancement of the monsoon is expected to bring widespread rainfall and relief from prevailing hot weather conditions in several regions.

Heavy Rainfall Alert

The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall over several parts of the country today, including:

  • The North Eastern states,
  • Andaman and Nicobar Islands,
  • Kerala and Mahe,
  • Odisha,
  • Tamil Nadu,
  • Puducherry and Karaikal.

Residents in these areas have been advised to remain cautious, particularly in low-lying regions prone to waterlogging and localised flooding.

Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds

The weather department also warned of thundersquall conditions over:

  • Madhya Pradesh,
  • Telangana, and
  • West Rajasthan

until tomorrow.

In addition, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are likely to affect several states today, including:

  • Andhra Pradesh,
  • Bihar,
  • Chhattisgarh,
  • Himachal Pradesh,
  • Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh,
  • Jharkhand,
  • Maharashtra,
  • Uttarakhand,
  • Interior Karnataka, and
  • West Bengal.

The IMD has advised people in vulnerable areas to avoid open spaces during lightning activity and follow local advisories issued by authorities.

Heatwave and Humidity Conditions

Despite the advancing monsoon, heatwave conditions are expected to persist over parts of Maharashtra today.

Meanwhile, hot and humid weather is likely to continue over:

  • Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and
  • Konkan and Goa

until tomorrow.

Advisory to the Public

The IMD has urged residents in affected regions to stay updated with the latest forecasts and warnings, especially those engaged in agriculture, fishing, transport, and outdoor activities.

Authorities have also advised:

  • Avoiding shelter under trees during thunderstorms,
  • Securing loose outdoor objects in areas prone to strong winds,
  • Exercising caution while travelling during heavy rainfall,
  • Monitoring local weather bulletins regularly.

The latest forecast highlights the dynamic nature of India’s weather patterns during the transition phase of the southwest monsoon, with different regions experiencing a mix of rainfall, thunderstorms, heatwaves, and humid conditions simultaneously.
