Heatwave Alert: Vulnerable Groups Asked to Take Precautions
The India Meteorological Department has issued heatwave guidance and public advisories as several parts of the country continue to witness rising temperatures and above-normal weather conditions.
According to the department, maximum temperatures across Northwest India, Central India, and Peninsular India are currently ranging between 40°C and 44°C.
In many regions, temperatures are reportedly 5°C or more above normal, indicating a developing heat stress situation. The IMD warned that health impacts of heatwaves can include dehydration, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.
The department stressed that early awareness and preventive measures are crucial to reducing heat-related illnesses. It advised people to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure during peak afternoon hours, wear light clothing, and take special care of vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and outdoor workers.
The IMD further said there is unlikely to be any significant change in maximum temperatures over northwest India till the 27th of this month.
Its extended outlook suggests that heatwave conditions are likely to persist over the next seven days in parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and the Vidarbha region.
