Fishermen Asked to Stay Ashore as Monsoon Intensifies in South India
The India Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rainfall across parts of Kerala until June 14 and warned fishermen against venturing into the sea along the Kerala-Karnataka-Lakshadweep coast due to strong winds and rough weather conditions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday forecast heavy rainfall across parts of Kerala till June 14 and issued an advisory asking fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea owing to adverse weather conditions.
According to the weather agency, strong winds with speeds ranging between 40 and 60 kilometres per hour, accompanied by rough sea conditions, are likely to prevail along the Kerala–Karnataka–Lakshadweep coasts over the next couple of days.
In view of the deteriorating marine conditions, the IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea during this period to ensure their safety.
The department also stated that several parts of Kerala are likely to experience heavy rainfall between June 10 and June 14, as the southwest monsoon continues to strengthen over the region.
The forecast comes amid increased monsoon activity across southern India, with coastal and interior districts expected to receive substantial rainfall. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have urged residents, particularly those living in low-lying and vulnerable areas, to remain vigilant and follow official advisories.
The IMD’s warnings are intended to minimise risks associated with rough seas, strong winds, and heavy precipitation, which can disrupt fishing activities, transportation, and daily life in affected regions.
Disaster management agencies and local administrations have also been asked to stay prepared to respond to any weather-related emergencies, including waterlogging, landslides in hilly areas, and disruptions to essential services.
Residents and travellers have been advised to keep track of the latest weather updates issued by the IMD and exercise caution while undertaking outdoor activities during periods of intense rainfall.
As the monsoon advances further, Kerala is expected to continue witnessing intermittent spells of rain, bringing both relief from summer heat and challenges associated with severe weather conditions.
