James Cameron Continues Work on Expanding Avatar Franchise
Oscar-winning filmmaker James Cameron says the future installments of the blockbuster Avatar franchise are still progressing, while he continues exploring new technologies to improve filmmaking efficiency.
Oscar-winning filmmaker James Cameron has said that the fourth and fifth installments of his acclaimed Avatar franchise are still under development.
Speaking on The Empire Film Podcast, Cameron said the projects are “still floating” as he continues to work on multiple ideas and writing assignments.
“I’ll be doing some writing, I’ve got a number of projects I’m cooking. And ‘Avatar 4 and 5’ are still floating out there,” Cameron said during the podcast appearance.

Cameron launched the Avatar franchise in 2009 with the release of Avatar, which became one of the highest-grossing films in cinema history.
The franchise later expanded with Avatar: The Way of Water in 2022, followed by Avatar: Fire and Ash in 2025.
The filmmaker also indicated that he is interested in adopting emerging technologies to make film production more efficient, continuing his long-standing reputation for pushing technological boundaries in cinema.

Cameron is widely known for pioneering advancements in visual effects, motion-capture filmmaking, and 3D cinematic technology through projects such as Titanic and the Avatar series.
The Avatar franchise remains one of Hollywood’s biggest science-fiction properties, with future installments expected to continue exploring the fictional world of Pandora and its characters.
