West Bengal Explores Alternatives to Direct Land Acquisition for Industry
The West Bengal government is considering land pooling and expanding industrial parks to make larger parcels of land available for industry without relying on direct land acquisition, an approach aimed at addressing fragmented land holdings.
KOLKATA: The West Bengal government is exploring land pooling and the development of additional industrial parks to facilitate the availability of large parcels of land required by industries, without relying on direct land acquisition.
The issue of land acquisition remains politically sensitive in the state following the Singur and Nandigram agitations. Against this backdrop, the government is examining alternative approaches that could help industries secure the larger tracts of land needed for investment and expansion.
Subrata Gupta, adviser to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, said land pooling is among the options being evaluated for land aggregation, alongside giving greater emphasis to the development of industrial parks.
According to Gupta, the objective is to make larger parcels of land available to industry while addressing the challenges created by fragmented land holdings. Land pooling could therefore provide an alternative mechanism for assembling land for industrial projects while avoiding direct acquisition.
The government is also looking to give greater impetus to industrial park development, which could provide ready industrial infrastructure and help attract new investments to the state.
