Trump Offers ‘Better Deal’ to Iran as Fresh US-Iran Talks Remain Uncertain
Donald Trump said he is offering Iran a better deal as uncertainty continues over a second round of negotiations between Tehran and the United States.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump said a new agreement with Iran would be far better than the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, also known as the Iran nuclear deal.
The JCPOA was signed by Iran, the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, Germany, and the European Union to limit Tehran’s nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief. Trump withdrew the US from the pact in 2018.
Trump said Vice President JD Vance, Jared Kushner, and Special Representative Steve Witkoff are heading to Islamabad for the next round of talks.
However, Iran has not confirmed participation. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said no final decision has been made, citing the US capture of an Iranian ship over the weekend and calling it an act of aggression.
The two countries also remain locked in a standoff over the Strait of Hormuz, where the US has imposed a blockade on Iranian ports while Iran has reversed its earlier commitment to keep the waterway open during the ceasefire period.
