Seal U SUV to Debut BYD’s DM-i Technology in India
BYD India has announced that it will introduce its first plug-in hybrid vehicle, the Seal U SUV, later this year. Built on the company’s Dual Mode Intelligent (DM-i) technology, the SUV will bring an electric-first driving experience to the Indian market.
BYD India, the Indian subsidiary of Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD Company Limited, on Tuesday announced that it will launch its first plug-in hybrid vehicle in the country later this year.
The company confirmed that the upcoming BYD Seal U SUV will be the first model in India to feature its proprietary DM-i (Dual Mode Intelligent) technology. While showcasing the platform, BYD declined to reveal pricing details, stating that specifications and prices would be announced closer to the official launch.
Unlike conventional hybrid systems, which rely primarily on internal combustion engines with electric motors providing supplementary assistance, BYD’s DM-i technology adopts an electric-first approach.
Under this system, the vehicle’s battery powers the SUV during most driving conditions, delivering a smoother and quieter electric driving experience. The petrol engine is activated mainly to extend the driving range and improve efficiency when additional power is required or when battery levels are low.
BYD stated that the technology has been developed to combine the benefits of electric mobility with the convenience of conventional fuel-powered vehicles, particularly addressing concerns related to charging infrastructure and range anxiety.
The introduction of the Seal U SUV marks BYD India’s entry into the growing plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) segment, expanding its portfolio beyond fully electric offerings. The move reflects increasing interest among automakers in offering transitional technologies that cater to consumers seeking enhanced fuel efficiency without depending entirely on charging networks.
Industry experts believe plug-in hybrids could play an important role in India’s evolving mobility landscape by bridging the gap between traditional internal combustion vehicles and fully electric models.
With the launch of the Seal U SUV, BYD aims to strengthen its presence in India’s premium mobility segment and offer customers a new alternative that combines electric performance, practicality, and extended driving range.
Further details regarding battery specifications, electric-only range, power output, features, and pricing are expected to be unveiled in the months leading up to the launch.
