Jammu and Kashmir Pushes for Greater Autonomy and Accelerated Growth
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday renewed his demand for the early restoration of full statehood, telling Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the move is essential to strengthening democratic institutions, enhancing public participation, and accelerating the Union Territory’s development journey.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Thursday and strongly advocated for the early restoration of full statehood to the Union Territory, describing it as a crucial step toward fulfilling the aspirations of its people.
According to an official statement issued by the Jammu and Kashmir government, Abdullah conveyed the sentiments and expectations of the region’s residents, emphasising that restoring statehood would reinforce democratic governance and enable greater public participation in decision-making processes.
The Chief Minister reportedly highlighted that the return of statehood would not merely represent an administrative change but would serve as a foundation for the next phase of Jammu and Kashmir’s political, economic, and social development. He stressed that democratic institutions become more effective when local aspirations are adequately represented through a fully empowered state government.
Abdullah also sought enhanced support from the Centre to boost the Union Territory’s economic and infrastructural growth. He underscored the need for sustained investment in development projects, improved connectivity, employment generation, and initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for residents.
“Jammu and Kashmir is committed to being a full and productive partner in India’s growth story,” the government statement said, adding that robust backing from the Centre, combined with the timely restoration of statehood, could significantly accelerate the region’s progress toward inclusive growth, economic prosperity, and transparent governance.
The demand for statehood restoration has remained a prominent political issue in Jammu and Kashmir since the erstwhile state was reorganised into two Union Territories in 2019. The latest meeting assumes significance as the elected government continues to advocate for greater administrative autonomy and a stronger role in shaping the region’s future development agenda.
Observers believe that any movement on the issue of statehood could have far-reaching implications for governance, political stability, and public confidence in Jammu and Kashmir’s democratic institutions.
