Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal and Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Rajiv Ranjan Singh on Thursday held a high-level meeting to discuss a comprehensive roadmap for boosting India’s seafood sector and improving its global export competitiveness.

According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the meeting focused on aligning export promotion activities with the objectives of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana and other allied initiatives aimed at modernising and expanding the fisheries sector.

The two ministries reaffirmed their commitment to increasing seafood exports through a coordinated strategy centred on value addition, infrastructure enhancement, product diversification, quality assurance, and expansion into new international markets.

Discussions also covered the promotion of deep-sea fishing, strengthening cold-chain and export infrastructure, and encouraging wider stakeholder participation across the fisheries and aquaculture ecosystem.

Officials said the government aims to improve India’s competitiveness in global seafood trade by focusing on high-quality production standards, sustainable fishing practices, and better market access for exporters.

India is among the world’s major seafood exporting nations, with marine products contributing significantly to agricultural and allied exports. The government believes that stronger coordination between commerce and fisheries departments will help unlock further growth opportunities for the sector.

The meeting comes amid increasing global demand for seafood products and ongoing efforts by the government to expand India’s export footprint through policy support, infrastructure development, and international trade engagement.
