In a significant boost to agricultural exports from Northeast India, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced that Assam’s celebrated Tezpur Litchi has reached international markets.

The first export consignment of the Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged Tezpur litchi has been dispatched to Dubai with the support of the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority.

Sharing the development through a social media post, Goyal said the initiative would provide global recognition to one of Assam’s most prized horticultural products. He added that expanding access to overseas markets would enable local farmers to secure better returns for their produce and strengthen the agricultural economy of the region.

Tezpur litchi, cultivated primarily in and around the Tezpur region, is renowned for its distinctive sweetness, aroma, juicy pulp, and superior quality. The GI tag accorded to the fruit recognizes its unique characteristics linked to its geographical origin and helps protect its identity in domestic and international markets.

The export initiative is also expected to create fresh opportunities for farmers and producer groups across Northeast India by promoting value-added agricultural products on the global stage. It aligns with the government’s broader objective of diversifying India’s agri-export basket and increasing the participation of farmers in international trade.

APEDA, which functions under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has been actively facilitating exports of region-specific agricultural products by assisting with quality standards, logistics, market access, and promotional initiatives.

Officials believe that the successful export of Tezpur litchi could pave the way for other GI-tagged products from the Northeast to gain international visibility, further strengthening the region’s contribution to India’s export growth story.

The development underscores the growing global demand for premium Indian agricultural produce and highlights the potential of indigenous products to compete successfully in international markets.
