Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered India the opportunity to acquire the fifth-generation Sukhoi Su-57 stealth fighter aircraft and has suggested the possibility of joint manufacturing in India.

The proposal reflects the deep-rooted strategic and defence ties between India and Russia, which have spanned several decades. Russia has traditionally been India’s largest defence supplier, providing a wide range of military platforms, including fighter aircraft, submarines, tanks, and missile systems.

According to reports, the offer includes the potential for localized production under India’s defence manufacturing initiatives, which aim to boost domestic aerospace and defence capabilities.

The development comes at a time when India is reassessing its future air combat requirements and seeking to modernize the fleet of the Indian Air Force.

However, New Delhi has increasingly diversified its defence procurement strategy in recent years. Supply chain disruptions and delivery challenges arising from the Russia-Ukraine conflict have prompted India to broaden its defence partnerships and reduce dependence on any single supplier.

India is also pursuing its indigenous fifth-generation fighter programme, the Advanced Multirole Combat Aircraft (AMCA). The ambitious project is considered one of the largest aerospace initiatives undertaken by the country and is aimed at developing a home-grown stealth combat aircraft equipped with advanced avionics, sensors, and weapons systems.

Defence analysts believe the Su-57 offer could present India with an additional option as it evaluates future fighter aircraft requirements. However, any decision would likely involve considerations related to technology transfer, production capabilities, operational requirements, lifecycle costs, and compatibility with India’s long-term defence strategy.

The Su-57 is Russia’s premier fifth-generation combat aircraft and is designed with stealth features, advanced maneuverability, and multi-role combat capabilities. It is intended to compete with other modern fifth-generation fighter platforms deployed by major military powers.

While no official decision has been announced by India regarding the proposal, the offer is expected to feature prominently in future defence discussions between New Delhi and Moscow.
