From Startups to Satellites: India’s Space Ambitions Gather Momentum
India’s space sector is poised for significant growth, with the country’s space economy projected to expand from nearly USD 9 billion to around USD 45 billion over the next seven to eight years. Union Minister Jitendra Singh attributed the growth to policy reforms, private sector participation, and a rapidly expanding startup ecosystem.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh has said that India’s space economy, currently valued at nearly USD 9 billion, is expected to grow to approximately USD 45 billion within the next seven to eight years, reflecting the country’s increasing prominence in the global space industry.
Speaking about the transformation of the sector, Singh highlighted the rapid expansion of India’s space startup ecosystem. He noted that the number of space-focused startups has risen dramatically from a single-digit figure a few years ago to nearly 400 startups today, demonstrating growing entrepreneurial interest and investment in the field.
The minister credited the growth to reforms introduced under the government of Narendra Modi, which opened strategic sectors such as space and parts of the nuclear ecosystem to private participation. According to Singh, these changes ended decades of limited access and created opportunities for innovation, investment, and collaboration between government agencies and private enterprises.

India’s space sector has witnessed significant advancements in recent years through achievements led by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the emergence of private companies engaged in satellite manufacturing, launch services, earth observation technologies, and space-based applications.
The growing participation of private players is expected to strengthen India’s competitiveness in the global space market, create high-skilled employment opportunities, and contribute to technological innovation. Industry experts believe that increased investment and regulatory support could position India as a major hub for commercial space activities in the coming decade.
The projected growth also aligns with the government’s broader vision of leveraging science, technology, and innovation to drive economic development while expanding India’s footprint in advanced sectors such as space exploration, satellite communications, and aerospace manufacturing.
As India continues to open new avenues for private investment and technological collaboration, the space sector is expected to become one of the country’s fastest-growing strategic industries.
