West Bengal Politics Witnesses Major Upheaval as TMC Faces Leadership Battle
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has been plunged into its most serious internal crisis since its inception, with 58 dissident MLAs backing expelled legislator Ritabrata Banerjee as the leader of the legislature party. In a dramatic countermeasure, the Mamata Banerjee faction dissolved all organisational committees across West Bengal, intensifying the struggle for control of the party.
A major political upheaval has erupted within the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), as 58 dissident MLAs have thrown their support behind expelled legislator Ritabrata Banerjee and formally communicated to the Speaker of the West Bengal Assembly that they recognize him as the leader of the legislature party.
The development marks a decisive escalation in the internal rebellion that has been brewing within the party following its recent electoral setback. The move by the dissident legislators directly challenges the authority of the faction led by Mamata Banerjee and raises questions about the control of the party’s legislative wing.

In response, the Mamata Banerjee camp announced the dissolution of all organisational committees of the TMC across West Bengal. The decision is widely being viewed as an attempt to restructure the party machinery and reassert control amid growing internal dissent.
Political observers describe the twin developments as the most significant challenge faced by the TMC since its formation. The confrontation has created uncertainty over the party’s organisational structure, legislative leadership, and future political direction.
The rebellion comes in the aftermath of the party’s crushing defeat in the state assembly elections, which triggered intense introspection and disagreements among senior leaders and legislators. The backing of a substantial number of MLAs for Ritabrata Banerjee suggests that the internal divisions have now moved beyond isolated dissent and evolved into a full-scale leadership struggle.

The focus is now likely to shift to the office of the Speaker, who may be called upon to examine competing claims regarding leadership within the legislature party. At the same time, the dissolution of organisational committees could pave the way for a broader restructuring of the party at the grassroots and state levels.
As the power struggle deepens, political analysts believe the coming days will be crucial in determining whether the TMC can maintain unity or faces a formal split in its ranks.
