Indian Railways has reported robust growth in both freight and passenger transportation during May 2026, underscoring its critical role in supporting economic activity and mobility across the country.

According to the Ministry of Railways, freight loading reached 145 million tonnes during the month, representing a 1.3 per cent increase compared to the corresponding period last year. The achievement comes despite challenges posed by the ongoing geopolitical situation in West Asia, which has had indirect effects on logistics operations and supply chains worldwide.

The growth in freight traffic was driven by strong performance across key commodities, including iron ore, steel, and fertilizers. Fertilizer loading registered a notable increase of 6.2 per cent, reflecting the railways’ continued support for the agriculture sector and ensuring the timely movement of essential inputs across the country.

The ministry highlighted that coal transportation remained a major operational priority. Railway authorities closely monitored coal movement throughout the network to meet the requirements of thermal power plants and safeguard the nation’s energy security.

On the passenger front, Indian Railways transported more than 61 crore passengers during May, compared to approximately 59 crore passengers during the same period last year. The increase reflects growing demand for rail travel across various segments.

The strongest growth was recorded in the non-suburban category, where passenger numbers rose by 7.4 per cent, increasing from 28 crore to 30 crore. This segment includes long-distance and intercity travel, indicating a sustained rise in mobility and economic activity.

Railway officials attributed the overall performance to efficient network management, enhanced operational planning, and continuous efforts to improve freight and passenger services. The figures further reinforce the role of Indian Railways as a backbone of the country’s transportation infrastructure and economic development.
