A strong weather system brought thunderstorms, heavy rain, and gusty winds to Kolkata and several parts of South Bengal on Friday, offering respite from the prevailing humid conditions.

Dark clouds began gathering over Kolkata and surrounding areas from the morning, before intense rainfall swept across large sections of the city during the afternoon.

Several localities, including Salt Lake, Esplanade, Jadavpur, and Baranagar, witnessed heavy showers accompanied by strong winds reaching speeds of 50-60 kmph. The sudden change in weather led to a noticeable drop in temperature and improved comfort levels for residents.

The impact of the storm system was not limited to Kolkata. Similar weather conditions were reported from neighbouring districts, including Howrah and Hooghly, where heavy rain and gusty winds affected normal activities.

Meteorologists have been forecasting thunderstorm activity across parts of eastern India due to favourable atmospheric conditions and moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal. Such pre-monsoon thunderstorms, locally known as “Kalbaisakhi” or Nor’westers, are common in West Bengal during this period.

While the rainfall brought relief from oppressive humidity, authorities advised commuters to remain cautious as strong winds and waterlogging in low-lying areas could temporarily disrupt traffic and public transport services.

Weather officials are continuing to monitor the situation and have indicated the possibility of further thunderstorm activity in parts of South Bengal over the coming days.
