The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has made the study of three languages compulsory for students from Class IX beginning July 1, 2026.

In a circular issued on May 15, the Board clarified that while the three-language requirement will be mandatory, there will be no separate Board examination for the third language, referred to as R3, in Class X.

According to the circular, at least two of the three languages studied by students must be native Indian languages. The decision has been taken in accordance with the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023.

The policy aims to promote multilingual education, strengthen linguistic diversity, and encourage greater familiarity with Indian languages among students.

Education officials said the framework is designed to support cognitive development, cultural understanding, and communication skills while preserving India’s linguistic heritage.

The three-language formula has long been part of national education discussions, and the latest move is seen as a significant step toward implementing reforms proposed under NEP 2020.

Schools affiliated with CBSE are expected to align their curriculum and academic planning with the revised language requirements before implementation begins in 2026.

The Board’s clarification that there will be no Class X Board examination for the third language is expected to address concerns among students and parents regarding additional examination pressure.
