Dust Storm Triggers Weather Alert in Mumbai Metropolitan Region
A sudden dust storm accompanied by strong winds swept across parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, reducing visibility and disrupting travel, while Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde returned mid-flight due to worsening weather conditions.
A sudden dust storm swept across several parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region on Thursday evening, affecting areas including Navi Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan and Murbad.
The storm, accompanied by strong winds and a dense cloud of dust, struck around 4.30 pm, significantly reducing visibility in multiple locations and causing concern among commuters and residents.
Amid the rapidly deteriorating weather, the helicopter carrying Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde was forced to return while en route to Murbad. According to officials, the pilot noticed an approaching storm system and immediately informed Shinde before safely turning back and landing at the Pawan Hans Helipad.
Shinde was travelling from Mumbai to Murbad to attend a wedding ceremony at the time of the incident.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds with speeds of 40-50 kmph at isolated places across South Konkan-Goa, South Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada.
The weather department has also predicted light to moderate rainfall in isolated pockets of Thane, Kalyan, Navi Mumbai and nearby districts. Rainfall intensity is expected to range from less than 5 mm per hour to moderate showers between 5 mm and 15 mm per hour in some areas.
Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorm activity and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of strong winds and reduced visibility.
