Lord Varadaraja Perumal Blesses Devotees in Unique Temple Tradition
Sacred Nadavaavi well ritual draws large crowds chanting “Govinda” in Ayyangar Kulam
Devotees gathered in large numbers in Kanchipuram to witness the unique and sacred rituals of Chitra Pournami, as Lord Varadaraja Perumal descended into the underground Nadavaavi well at Ayyangar Kulam to bless devotees.
Kanchipuram, known as the “City of Temples,” holds special significance as the abode of Varadaraja Perumal, one of the revered Divya Desams. As part of tradition, the deity visits the Sanjeevirayar Temple during Chitra Pournami.
The procession began with the idol being taken in a glass palanquin through Ayyangar Kulam and nearby villages, including Punjai Arasan Thangal and Thoosi, allowing devotees to have darshan along the route.

At the temple, a special Thirumanjanam (holy ablution) was performed, after which the deity—adorned with vibrant garlands—was ceremonially taken down nearly 20 feet into the Nadavaavi well. The ritual included circumambulation of the sacred tank and Deeparadhana (lamp worship).
Devotees chanted “Govinda, Govinda” as they witnessed the rare event. Prasadam, Theertham, and Sadari were distributed following the ceremony.
The festival reflects centuries-old traditions and continues to draw thousands of devotees each year, showcasing the rich spiritual heritage of Tamil Nadu.
