President Sheinbaum Reasserts National Sovereignty Amid US Questions

Claudia Sheinbaum has said that Mexico’s sovereignty is not negotiable, firmly rejecting any form of foreign interference, particularly from the United States.

Speaking at her daily press conference, Sheinbaum said cooperation with other countries must strictly comply with Mexico’s constitution and national security laws.

She stated that Mexico’s relationship with the United States is based on coordination and cooperation, but stressed the need to clarify whether foreign intelligence personnel were involved in a recent operation in the northern state of Chihuahua.

The Mexican President warned that any unauthorised participation by foreign agents would violate domestic law.

The remarks come after two US embassy personnel were killed in a vehicle accident in Chihuahua on Sunday. Local authorities described them as instructors participating in routine training exchanges.

However, a US newspaper reported that the two were Central Intelligence Agency agents involved in an anti-narcotics operation.

Earlier on April 22, Sheinbaum had also said the federal government was unaware of CIA agents allegedly taking part in an anti-drug operation in northern Mexico aimed at dismantling a clandestine drug laboratory.

The issue has added fresh tension to security cooperation between Mexico and the United States.
