Tshering Tobgay on Monday held discussions with Lakshman Prasad Acharya and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to explore ways to deepen cooperation between Bhutan and India’s northeastern states.

Tobgay, who arrived in Assam earlier in the day, met the leaders at Lok Bhavan in Guwahati.

According to an official statement, the meeting involved detailed discussions on a broad range of issues related to strengthening bilateral ties and enhancing regional cooperation in areas of mutual interest, with particular emphasis on Assam and the wider northeast region.

India and Bhutan share close diplomatic, economic and cultural ties, with cooperation spanning trade, hydropower, connectivity, tourism, education and border management. Assam plays an important role in India-Bhutan relations due to its geographical proximity and connectivity links with the Himalayan kingdom.

The visit is being viewed as part of ongoing efforts to boost regional integration and collaboration between Bhutan and India’s northeastern states in sectors including infrastructure, commerce, sustainable development and people-to-people exchanges.
