At least seven people were killed and several others were critically injured after a fire broke out at a hotel in Birbhum district of West Bengal early Monday, police said.
The fire erupted at around 4.30 am on the ground floor of a four-storey hotel in the temple town of Tarapith, when most of the guests were asleep.
Several of those staying at the hotel were reportedly pilgrims who had travelled to Tarapith to offer prayers on the last Monday of the holy month of Shravan.
Tarapith is a prominent pilgrimage destination in West Bengal and is known for its famous Kali temple, which also has a shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva.
The blaze during the early morning hours created a serious emergency as guests were asleep when the fire broke out. Police said several people sustained critical injuries in the incident.
Emergency services and authorities responded to the incident, while further details regarding the cause of the fire and the circumstances leading to the deaths are awaited.
