Jammu and Kashmir is set to receive 200 electric buses under the PM E-Drive Scheme in a significant move towards sustainable and environmentally friendly public transportation.

Officials said the electric buses will primarily be deployed for tourism and pilgrimage-related transportation across the Union Territory, especially in ecologically sensitive and hilly regions where reducing pollution and improving mobility are considered major priorities.

The initiative is expected to strengthen green transport infrastructure while also improving travel facilities for tourists and pilgrims visiting key destinations in Jammu and Kashmir.

Authorities believe the introduction of electric buses will help reduce carbon emissions, lower fuel dependency, and support cleaner transportation systems in the region’s fragile mountain ecosystem.

The buses are also expected to enhance passenger comfort and connectivity on important tourism and pilgrimage routes, which witness heavy seasonal travel every year.

The deployment forms part of broader national efforts to accelerate electric mobility adoption and modernise public transport systems across India through cleaner energy solutions.
