Suvendu Adhikari Gets Hero’s Welcome in Kanthi After Oath Ceremony
Thousands of supporters gather outside Chief Minister’s residence in Purba Medinipur despite late-night arrival
Newly sworn-in West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari received an enthusiastic welcome in his hometown Kanthi in the early hours of Sunday, as thousands of supporters gathered outside his residence to celebrate his return.
After taking oath at the Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata on Saturday and attending official engagements through the day, Adhikari headed to Kanthi late at night following a visit to the Kalighat Kali Temple for prayers.
His convoy reportedly arrived at his residence, “Shantikunj,” around 2 am. Despite the late hour, large crowds had assembled in the neighbourhood since evening, waiting to greet the BJP leader after his historic swearing-in as the state’s first chief minister from the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Supporters waved party flags, chanted slogans, and burst into celebrations as Adhikari reached his hometown. The atmosphere in Kanthi resembled a festival, with many residents viewing the moment as a significant political milestone for the region.
Political observers noted that Purba Medinipur has long been considered a stronghold of the Adhikari family, and the massive turnout reflected the leader’s continuing popularity in the coastal district.
Adhikari’s rise to the chief minister’s post marks a dramatic political shift in West Bengal, ending decades of dominance by regional political parties in the state.
