Sikkim Enters Election Mode: ULB Poll Preparations Finalized
The State Election Commission of Sikkim, led by Commissioner K.C. Lepcha, officially announced today that the state has entered full “election mode” for the 2026 Municipal and Urban Local Body (ULB) polls. In a high-level meeting in Gangtok, it was revealed that the number of polling stations has been increased from 89 to 120, and the number of wards has expanded from 51 to 63 to accommodate the growing urban population in Pakyong and Soreng.
The final publication of electoral rolls was completed earlier this month, and the nomination process concluded today with a surge in Independent candidates and BJP representatives. This election is being viewed as a litmus test for the ruling SKM (Sikkim Krantikari Morcha) as they face a revitalized opposition and a growing number of independent youth leaders. The Commission has directed District Collectors and Superintendents of Police to ensure strict adherence to the Model Code of Conduct, especially in sensitive zones like Burtuk and Lower Sichey. The transition to digital monitoring for these polls is a first for the state, aimed at ensuring total transparency in the voting process.
