Police authorities in Mumbai have terminated the service of a constable who had been assigned as the bodyguard of former Baba Siddique in connection with allegations of dereliction of duty, officials said.

The dismissed constable, identified as Shyam Sonawane, was attached to the Protection and Security branch of Mumbai Police and had been deployed as Siddique’s security officer.

Baba Siddique, 66, was shot dead on the night of October 12, 2024, outside the office of his son Zeeshan Siddique in Mumbai’s Bandra area. The killing had sparked widespread political reactions and raised serious concerns over the security arrangements provided to high-profile public figures.

According to officials, departmental action was initiated against the constable after an internal review reportedly found lapses in duty during the incident. Following the inquiry, authorities decided to terminate his services.

Investigators had earlier arrested multiple accused in connection with the murder, while security protocols for political leaders in Maharashtra were also reviewed after the high-profile attack.
