Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing held wide-ranging discussions on Monday aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors, including trade, defence, energy, infrastructure, and connectivity.

During the meeting, President Min Aung Hlaing assured India that Myanmar’s territory would not be allowed to be used in any manner detrimental to India’s security interests. The assurance is significant given the long and sensitive border shared by the two countries and ongoing security concerns in the region.

The leaders also reviewed progress in bilateral projects and explored opportunities to deepen economic engagement. Connectivity initiatives, border infrastructure development, and energy cooperation featured prominently in the discussions as both sides sought to enhance regional integration and economic growth.

President Min Aung Hlaing is currently on a five-day visit to India, his first major visit to the country since assuming the presidency following Myanmar’s recent parliamentary elections. The trip is seen as an important step in advancing diplomatic and strategic engagement between the neighboring countries.

The elections in Myanmar were conducted over December and January after years of political turbulence that followed the military takeover of February 2021. The coup had ousted the democratically elected government led by Aung San Suu Kyi and triggered widespread protests and international scrutiny.

India and Myanmar share close historical, cultural, and strategic ties. Myanmar plays a crucial role in India’s Act East Policy and serves as a key gateway connecting India with Southeast Asia. Both nations have been working together on border management, infrastructure projects, counter-insurgency cooperation, and trade facilitation.
