Former Bangladesh Prime Minister expresses hope for stronger India-Bangladesh ties under new West Bengal leadership
Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday congratulated Suvendu Adhikari after he assumed office as the Chief Minister of West Bengal following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s sweeping victory in the state assembly elections.
In a statement, Hasina conveyed her greetings on behalf of herself and the people of Bangladesh, describing the BJP’s performance in West Bengal as a major electoral victory.
She highlighted the historical and cultural importance of West Bengal in maintaining close ties between India and Bangladesh and expressed confidence that relations between the two sides would further strengthen during Adhikari’s tenure.
According to the statement, Hasina said West Bengal has always played a unique role in fostering genuine friendship and cooperation between the neighbouring countries. She also voiced optimism that bilateral engagement and regional collaboration would reach “a new trajectory” under the new leadership.
The message assumes significance amid evolving political developments in eastern India and the broader diplomatic relationship between Bangladesh and India.
