Filmmaker-turned-politician Raj Chakraborty on Thursday announced his decision to quit active politics, days after losing the Barrackpore assembly seat in the recently concluded West Bengal elections.

Chakraborty, who had won the constituency in 2021 as a candidate of the All India Trinamool Congress, was defeated this time by Kaustav Bagchi of the Bharatiya Janata Party by a margin of 15,822 votes.

In a statement shared on social media, Chakraborty said that his journey in politics had come to an end, signalling his withdrawal from active political life after a single term as MLA.

Known primarily for his successful career in the Bengali film industry, Raj Chakraborty entered politics ahead of the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections and represented Barrackpore in the outgoing assembly.

His decision comes amid major political changes in West Bengal following the BJP’s decisive victory in the state assembly elections, which ended the TMC’s 15-year rule.

Supporters and members of the Bengali film fraternity reacted to his announcement online, with many acknowledging his contributions both in cinema and public life.
