Chief Secretary of West Bengal is Changed?
The dates for the assembly elections for the 294 constituencies in West Bengal were officially announced yesterday, Sunday, March 15. It has been announced that the elections in West Bengal will be held in two phases this time. Accordingly, voting will be held for 152 seats in the first phase on April 21 and for the remaining seats on April 29. This sudden decision of the Election Commission has been welcomed by opposition parties including the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress. The political arena of West Bengal has now reached a very exciting stage due to this announcement by the Election Commission.
Within hours of the announcement of the election dates, the Election Commission has issued a sweeping order to reshuffle the top officials of the state. Dushyant Nariyala has been appointed as the new Chief Secretary of West Bengal and the Commission has also issued an order to replace the state’s Home Secretary. The Commission has set a deadline for all the new officials to assume their duties by 3 pm on Monday. The Commission has categorically stated that the transferred officials should not be involved in any election-related work until the election is over. These sweeping changes made by the Commission in the administrative responsibilities of the state government have caused great shock among the ruling Trinamool Congress party.
There was already a major conflict between the state government and the Election Commission on various issues such as revision of the voter list and salary of government employees. The Election Commission’s removal of Nandini Chakravarthy, who was currently serving as the Chief Secretary, has further increased the conflict. The Election Commission has explained that these drastic measures are being taken to ensure that the elections are held fairly and freely. In a letter sent to the state government, the Commission has stated that a report on the appointment of new officers should be submitted immediately. This sudden change of officers has become a major topic of discussion in political circles as the election field is heating up.
