A fresh challenge has emerged for the newly formed Karnataka government after senior Congress leader Ramalinga Reddy announced on Friday that he would tender his resignation from the state cabinet.

Reddy expressed disappointment over the allocation of portfolios, stating that he had expected to be assigned the Bengaluru Development portfolio but was instead given charge of the Major and Medium Irrigation Department.

The announcement comes less than a day after D. K. Shivakumar finalized and announced the distribution of portfolios among ministers in his newly constituted cabinet.

According to Reddy, the portfolio allocation did not align with assurances he had received during discussions on cabinet formation. His decision to step down highlights early signs of discontent within the ruling Congress government following the recent leadership transition in the state.

The resignation, if formally submitted and accepted, could present an immediate political challenge for Chief Minister Shivakumar, who took office only recently and has been working to balance regional, caste, and factional interests within the party while forming his cabinet.

Political observers note that portfolio allocation has historically been a sensitive issue in coalition and party governments, often reflecting internal power equations and leadership priorities.

Neither the Chief Minister’s Office nor senior Congress leaders have issued an official response to Reddy’s announcement so far. Party leaders are expected to engage with the veteran legislator in an effort to resolve the matter and prevent further discord within the cabinet.

The development comes at a crucial time for the new administration, which has begun rolling out its governance agenda and recently announced several youth- and student-focused welfare initiatives.

Whether Reddy follows through with his resignation or the issue is resolved through negotiations remains to be seen in the coming days.
