Police on Friday halted a protest march organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party in Srinagar demanding a complete prohibition on liquor in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.

According to officials, scores of BJP leaders and workers gathered near Ram Munshi Bagh Park and attempted to march towards the residence of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at Gupkar.

Protesters raised slogans calling for a total ban on the sale and consumption of liquor in the Union Territory. Police personnel intervened and stopped the march before it could proceed further toward the chief minister’s residence.

Officials said some BJP leaders and party workers were temporarily detained during the protest as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order. They were later released.

The demonstration comes amid ongoing political and public debate regarding liquor sales and regulation in Jammu and Kashmir. Supporters of prohibition have argued that a ban is necessary to protect social and cultural values, while others have raised concerns regarding economic and tourism-related implications.
