Currency Cleanup Near Completion as ₹2000 Notes Return
Value of ₹2000 notes in circulation drops sharply from ₹3.56 lakh crore to ₹5,451 crore
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday announced that 98.47% of ₹2000 denomination banknotes have been returned to the banking system since their withdrawal from circulation was announced on May 19, 2023.
According to RBI data, the total value of ₹2000 notes in circulation has declined significantly from ₹3.56 lakh crore at the time of the announcement to just ₹5,451 crore as of April 30, 2026.
The withdrawal of ₹2000 notes was part of the central bank’s currency management strategy, aimed at streamlining the currency system and promoting the use of lower denomination notes.
Despite the withdrawal, the ₹2000 notes continue to remain legal tender, and the RBI has been facilitating their deposit and exchange through banks.
The latest figures indicate that only a small fraction of the high-value notes remain in circulation, marking near-completion of the withdrawal process.
