The National Commission for Women has recommended major reforms concerning the rights of Muslim women in India, including codification of Muslim personal law, mandatory marriage registration, and stronger safeguards for women’s inheritance rights.

The recommendations are part of a report titled “Rights of Muslim Women in India,” which has been submitted to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Women and Child Development, and the Ministry of Minority Affairs.

According to the commission, the report was prepared after extensive national-level consultations and discussions involving stakeholders and experts. The objective of the recommendations is to strengthen the legal, social, and constitutional protections available to Muslim women across the country.

One of the key recommendations is the codification of Muslim personal law to ensure greater clarity, consistency, and legal safeguards in matters related to marriage, divorce, maintenance, and inheritance.

The commission has also recommended compulsory registration of Muslim marriages to improve legal recognition and documentation, which officials believe would help women secure their rights more effectively in disputes related to marital status, maintenance, and property.

Another major focus of the report is the protection of inheritance rights for Muslim women. The NCW emphasised the need for stronger enforcement mechanisms and legal awareness to ensure that women are not denied their rightful share in family property.

The report is expected to contribute to ongoing discussions regarding women’s rights, personal laws, and legal reforms aimed at promoting gender justice and constitutional equality in India.
